This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the manufacture and sustainment of advanced Remote Controlled Weapon System (RCWS) products while supporting engineering and production activities in a high-performance environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring product quality, operational efficiency, and compliance with safety and production requirements, while actively contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Senior Artisan is responsible for supporting engineering and production activities through the manufacture, modification, repair, and assembly of mechanical components and prototype equipment. The role further encompasses the operation, upkeep, and organisation of workshop machinery, tooling, and equipment, while providing a high level of technical support to engineers during concept development, prototyping, and mechanical rework activities.
Job description

Maintenance of Assembly Machines

  • Ensure all machines in the mechanical workshop are maintained and in working order
  • Ensure relevant measuring equipment is in place and that calibration is current
  • Manage workload and planning within the mechanical workshop environment
  • Conduct job analyses to determine maintenance and machining requirements
  • Perform routine and preventative machine maintenance
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable procedures and directives
  • Uphold quality standards to achieve company compliance
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment at all times

Servicing and Monitoring of Equipment

  • Assist in the building of prototypes
  • Manufacture and rework parts in compliance with company objectives, policies, contract requirements, and client expectations
  • Read and interpret designs, schematics, and CAD drawings
  • Support the redline process on manufacturing drawings
  • Report any irregularities, defects, and/or shortcomings to the Production Manager

Production Set-Up

  • Operate machinery within the machine shop proficiently and safely
  • Interpret, read, and understand mechanical drawings
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of trade-related tools and measuring equipment
  • Calculate and verify dimensions, sizes, and tolerances of workpieces
  • Operate machining equipment including lathes and milling machines
  • Visualise and calculate metal shapes and tolerances
  • Design jigs and templates as fabrication aids
  • Measure and mark metal stock for machining
  • Set up machine tools such as drills, lathes, grinders, and milling machines
  • Cut and shape materials to specified dimensions
  • File, grind, and shim metal components to ensure a smooth finish

Equipment and Tool Administration

  • Accurately complete all relevant documentation applicable to the work environment
  • Ensure the safekeeping, maintenance, and control of all tools and equipment
  • Keep inventory logs updated and ensure equipment remains in the required condition
  • Perform housekeeping within the designated work area
  • Strictly adhere to prescribed working hours

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
  • N5 Mechanical Engineering
  • Qualified Fitter and Turner Artisan with a recognised Trade Test certificate
  • Valid technical training and apprenticeship in Fitting and Turning
  • Minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience in a machining, toolroom, prototype, or mechanical workshop environment
  • Minimum 6 years' experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years' experience as a Fitter and Turner
  • In-depth knowledge of machine tools and their applications
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and design schematics
  • Extensive experience with metalworking tools, including drills, milling machines, grinders, and lathes
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and operate large machinery
  • Experience with quality control analysis
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Advanced troubleshooting and problem-solving skill
